Things you should know about safe bus travel for trips to and from school using school buses and regular route bus services.
Waiting for the bus...
- Be sure of the route number of the bus you want to catch.
- When the bus comes, signal the driver clearly. Raise your left arm.
- Have your bus pass or the right money ready.
- Stand ONE METRE back from the kerb. Wait until the bus stops moving before you get on.
Riding in the bus...
Bus drivers must watch the traffic at all times. You will help them if you know how to behave - and you will be helping to make sure that your trip is a safe one.
- DON'T talk to the driver while the bus is moving.
- DON'T make lots of noise - this can worry the driver.
- DON'T turn on your radio unless you have earphones.
- DON'T stand in front of the yellow line - you may block the driver's view of the traffic.
- DON'T ride on the steps. If you have to stand in the aisle, face the front of the bus and hold on tightly to the bars.
- If there is an empty seat, sit in it quietly. Keep your school bag on your lap or put it under the seat. Don't leave your bag where people can trip over it.
- Keep food and drinks in your bag until you get off the bus. Don't litter the bus and never throw things out of the windows.
- If there are adults standing, you are expected to offer them your seat.
- NEVER put your arms or head out of a window. You could hit a tree branch or a signpost - or even a car or truck.
- And don't damage the bus. Repairs cost a lot of money and your parents have to pay for them if you get caught.
- Remember, show care, courtesy and common sense when travelling on the bus.
Leaving the bus...
- DON'T carry your school bag over your shoulder while you are getting on or off the bus - other passengers could be hurt by it. Hold it in front of you.
- DON'T push others or rush when leaving the bus - you could cause an accident.
- DON'T leave until the bus has stopped moving. If you do, you may fall and be badly hurt.
- DON'T step off the kerb until the bus has moved off from the bus stop or you may not be seen by cars and trucks.
School Buses Are Safe To Use...
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, students who use school buses are 7 times safer than going by private car, 31 times safer than walking and 228 times safer than cycling.
